Nohkalikai Waterfalls

Where Nature Whispers a Timeless Tale : Nohkalikai

Nestled in the misty hills of Meghalaya, near the rain-soaked town of Cherrapunjee (Sohra), lies a spectacle that will take your breath away — Nohkalikai Waterfalls, the tallest plunge waterfall in India. As it cascades from a height of 1,115 feet into a deep blue pool below, it feels as though the sky itself is weeping into the earth, painting poetry in motion.

But beyond its stunning beauty, Nohkalikai carries a poignant story that touches the soul. It’s not just a destination — it’s a place where nature and legend meet, where every drop of water whispers a tale of love, loss, and eternal remembrance.

The Tale Behind the Name

“Nohkalikai” in the Khasi language translates to “The Leap of Ka Likai.”

Once upon a time, in a village near the edge of the waterfall, lived a woman named Ka Likai. After the untimely death of her husband, she worked tirelessly as a porter to care for her infant daughter — the last memory of her beloved.

Fate led her to remarry, hoping to restore balance and companionship to her life. But this chapter took a darker turn. Her second husband, consumed by jealousy for the child, committed an unthinkable act. When Ka Likai returned from her labor one day, she unknowingly ate a meal prepared by him — a meal that held the most devastating secret.

When she later discovered her daughter’s remains, Ka Likai was overcome with grief. In that moment of heartbreak, she ran to the edge of the cliff and leapt into the abyss, forever merging her sorrow with the roaring waters.

From Tragedy to Tribute

Today, Nohkalikai Falls stands not just as a natural marvel, but as a tribute to maternal love and emotional resilience. It reminds us that every drop of water that plunges into the emerald pool below carries the spirit of a mother’s undying love.

Yet, the atmosphere here is not one of sadness — rather, it’s a quiet reverence. As the mists swirl around you and rainbows dance in the spray, there’s a deep sense of peace. The falls don’t mourn; they sing. They invite you to reflect, reconnect, and rejuvenate.
